qemu is a emulation tool - Mer uses it primarily as part of the build process to allow ARM code to be executed on x86 machines.
Mer uses a very new qemu so it is likely that the version that comes with most distros will be too old.
The correct qemu is provided in the platform SDK.
- qemu is part of Mer Core
- qemu-usermode is delivered as part of the build dependencies and used within SB2 cross compilation and is a dynamic binary
- qemu-usermode-static is available in Mer Core and utilized in 'mic'
- Mer package git repository for the QEMU is http://gitweb.merproject.org/gitweb?p=mer-core/qemu-usermode.git;a=tree
- Upstream is typically Linaro QEMU
